Some Like It Hot... Not Me, But Some Do

Monday, June, 2, 2008

It’s started. Summer hibernation. I feel it happening already.

How can it be so suffocatingly hot so soon? (Ah yes, I know, see Al Gore’s PowerPoint presentation for a clue...) Waxing nostalgic about Matthew Broderick in Biloxi Blues for a moment, this weekend was like,...like,...well, like “Africa hot.”

Each time I ventured out this weekend, it felt as if I had just been swallowed up by a volcano. And the frequent temperature changes, from the parking lot into the chilly stores for a while, then back out to the muggy car, really did a number on my complexion.

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that our household is fairly sedentary , though we do love to golf, walk around our neighborhood and travel to check out sightseeing spots. But when you step out onto your lanai at 8:30am and gag on humidity in the shade, this is not encouraging. We thought we’d fooled the sly summer swelter by mowing our yard late in the day last Friday night. Surely, it wouldn’t be that hot after 6pm. And we learned, um, yes, it is.

I usually focus on projects inside the house during these melt-ya-like-butter times. It’s a great way to tackle those terrible mind-numbing projects like sock drawer straighten-ups, closet decluttering and photo box organizing, that are welcoming alternatives compared to sweating like buckets outdoors. But I don’t recall ever having to start these projects so early in the year. It doesn’t help that my mind tends to wander and lose focus when I’m hot and uncomfortable and sticky and sweaty. What was I saying?

Are you too finding it hard to embrace the dog days of summer that have arrived even before the actual first day of the season?

July already! My husband and I tried to venture outdoors this weekend but we couldn't take the heat. It's "mirage-creating, I'm breathing through a plastic bag, where am I?" hot! I must've started tearing up this weekend, because my husband said, "Your eyes look shiny," and I replied, "They're SWEATING!" So add another vote for "some like it not so hot.":)

When it comes to weather, I'm kinda weird. My favorite time of the year in Florida is summer, but if I'm not on the beach with a mojito in my hand then it can be pretty hard to breath at times. I pretty much spent the weekend with foggy sunglasses as I continuously traipsed in and out of the heat!

I love the heat. Probably because I came from the North where we did celebratory dances when the lake turned 72 degrees in August. (Yeah, I'm a damn Yankee.) I know someday my internal furnace will make me regret these words, but I could spend all day outside soaking up the heat.
