When I'm An Old Lady...

Tuesday, April, 8, 2008

The world has lost a very special woman.

Over the weekend, a dear co-worker passed away, leaving a hole in our office that no job posting or labor-pool asignee will ever be able to fill.

“Miss Marian,” as everyone called her, was 80 years old. From her station at our front desk, she greeted callers and visitors with a smile, warm words and a genuine willingness that left you no doubt that when she said “can I help you?” she really meant it.

For those of us in the office, she could see stress coming down the hall at 20 paces, and would greet the most frazzled face with “you look beautiful today.” If you asked her how she was doing in return, she would always answer “I am blessed.”

But really, it was we who were blessed to be near her each day. For a woman who spent her evenings and Bible study and her vacations building houses in poor countries, she was equally as happy riding roller coasters and equally as proud of her vibrant purple pants suit.

She would talk about “When I’m and old lady...” as if her eight decades on this earth were merely a prelude to better things to come.

And now, better things have come – her unwavering faith has cemented her a spot in heaven, I’m sure.

The world will miss her spirit. The office will miss her kindness.I will miss her beautiful outlook on what it means to be an “old lady.”

Goodbye, Miss Marian. You are a woman to be admired.

Some people don't fully realize how much their small gestures touch our lives in significant ways... sounds like a really wonderful lady.

Sounds like a nice lady. Next time you write something, you might want to have an editor proofread your copy. I doubt "asignee" is a word and I doubt Miss Marian would talk about "When I'm and old lady." Miss Marian would be proud - not!

Wow, she sounds wonderful!! Makes me wish I knew her. Your kind words also cause me to look a little deeper at myself and what effect I have on the people who cross my path each day. Do I try to brighten other's days or bring storm clouds? Anyone would be proud to have those kind words said about them. You have given her a beautiful tribute and I am glad you shared it with me.
