Better Late Than Never

Saturday, April, 5, 2008

Sorry I’m late, folks.

As one of the April issue’s featured interviewees, the kind editorial staff at skirt! has also given me the opportunity to be a guest blogger this month. Unfortunately, the week I was to start writing happened to – in a fit of horrible timing – coincide with the culmination of a huge project at work that I’d known for months was going to make last week the busiest of my year.

And so, at the risk of wearing out my skirt! welcome and the editor’s patience, I had to say “no.” It wasn’t a “forever” no, or an “I don’t want to” no – just a simple “I need to get some other things done first” no.

And it’s something most women don’t say enough.

I’ve always been horrible at saying no. I will overextend myself to the breaking point to make sure I never miss an opportunity, never let down a friend or loved one, never show my boss an ounce of weakness or incapability. Even when I mean to say “no,” it always seems to come out “no problem.”

So take this posting as permission, Gentle Readers. In this coming week, take a minute to figure out what really needs your attention, and what can be put off for a day or two. And – here’s the key – once you’ve decided it can wait, stop worrying about it. Stop feeling guilty that you had to delay something for your own sanity, even at the risk of disappointing someone else.

You’re only one woman. There’s only so much time to be amazing in any given day.
