Heather Lambie | Professional Organizer (St Pete, FL)
By Chris.Kuhn, Tuesday, December 30, 2008My work: My business is called Your Home Editor (yourhomeeditor.com) because I help people edit out what is not necessary in their homes. Aside from physically organizing belongings, a huge part of what I do is help people make decisions they don’t want to make… non-decisions that have resulted in a house (or closet, or even junk drawer) full of stuff they don’t need or use.
My passion: I would love to say something socially conscientious like “education” or “curing breast cancer”--both of which are important to me, as I was a high school teacher for five years and just walked 60 miles in the Breast Cancer 3-day. However, if I’m being honest, what I’m really passionate about is containers. I seriously get turned on in The Container Store. When, oh WHEN will they open one in Tampa? When they do, my husband can find me there on Fridays for happy hour.
My favorite possession: Because of what I do, I don’t really get attached to things. Every day I am surrounded by piles of other people’s things, so I really enjoy coming home to a blank slate. Plus, possessions can be replaced. It’s the people and experiences in my life that fall into my “favorites” category. Corny, but true.
My hometown: I’ve lived in St. Pete for five years, but grew up in Miami, FL.
I’m thinking about: Whether I made the right decision in cutting off all my hair last week.
Words I live by: Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone.
I can’t live without: My journals. They allow me to clear my head of all the nonsense going on in there.
I am most proud of: The facts I A) ran a marathon, B) endured natural childbirth, and C) had the guts and stamina to start and grow my own business.
What keeps me awake at night: The gajillion things on my to-do list.
One thing I never want to do again: Run a marathon.
If I could be totally wild, I would: Pack up the family and move to Sydney, Australia.
I am guilty of: Having six magazine subscriptions.
Right now I’m reading: CrazyBusy: Overstretched, Overbooked and about to Snap! Strategies for Coping in a World Gone ADD. By Edward M. Hallowell M.D. I am reading this book to better help my clients who are all in this position. Who am I kidding? I’m reading this book for ME!
The one item that has changed my life: The GPS in my car.
Favorite web site: thesartorialist.blogspot.com. I love this website because it reminds me of my time at NYU and all the beautiful, unique, daring people who make up New York City.
Last major purchase: In an attempt to practice what I preach and fight consumerism, I’ve been on a fiscal freeze since April ’08 so I haven’t made a major purchase since then. Last major purchase before that? A costume to wear at Trinidad Carnival.
The nickname I wish I had: Venus.
My theme song: “I’m Feeling Good” by Michael Buble
If I had a vanity plate on my car, it would say: DRIVEN
If I could do it all over again: I’d have more confidence.
My favorite body part: Shoulders and the boo-tay.
The food I could eat every day: Nachos.
If I were a superheroine, I would be: Tough Cookie, a bad-ass chic who takes no crap AND makes the best chocolate chip cookies ever.
My blog (if applicable): Click here to find me at onlineorganizing.com.
The most important thing I ever lost: Hours of sleep worrying about things that never happened.
The best thing I ever won: My husband! I won him in an arm wrestling match at a bar in Miami called The Hungry Sailor. OK, that’s not exactly true. But I did meet him at The Hungry Sailor and I did win his heart.
My best friend says I am: His wife.
I still can’t get the hang of: Texting. I’d so much rather speak to a human.
I wish I’d known: That it was all going to be OK.
The world would be a better place, if only: people would live by the Golden Rule
I’d like to learn to: speak Mandarin. That, and reconcile my bank account in Quickbooks.
Something most people don’t know about me: My mom is a New York Times bestselling author of more than 51 novels. And I taught OJ Simpson’s daughter when I was a high school teacher (never had to have a parent/teacher conference—PHEW!).
My mother always said: “Find the thing you love to do and then find a way to get people to pay you to do it.” And I did!
The worst idea I’ve ever had: Uh… don’t want to admit it, but at least I learn from my mistakes.
The smartest woman I know: I know many women who are smart, powerful, thoughtful, creative, brave, and interesting in their own ways. The smartest women I don’t know are Oprah and Margaret Thatcher.
My first job: Summer camp counselor at age 14. My first “real” job after college was as the Assistant Art Director at South Florida Magazine (now defunct).
What are you most vain about? My gut, a.k.a “the mommy pooch.” I run and run and run my tail off, but two kids have ruined my chance at bringing back washboard abs.
Whose diary would you most like to read? Mark Twain’s or Colin Powell’s
What do you fear the most? Losing my children (or someone hurting them).
Best one-liner you ever heard: Someday you’ll look back at all this and laugh. Laugh sooner.
